It’s time to be ethical and inclusive in our practice! Whether you work at an agency or in a client side organisation, many of us are navigating the world of data capture and analysis on a daily basis. But how do we navigate data in an ethical way? What should we keep in mind to ensure we don’t miss out on certain perspectives and tell diverse stories?
Capturing the voice of the consumer is a critical part of the innovation process, be it within an agency or client-side. However, a key challenge is ensuring that we take an ethical and inclusive approach to the research process - across recruitment, capture, analysis and implementation - so that we can deliver on innovation that truly represents the end consumer. How do we ensure that we as researchers are being ethically responsible in our approach to ensure that we capture complex perspectives and tell stories that capture the diversity of our research participants in an ethical and responsible way?
Our programming theme for Q1 is all about Ethics and Inclusion. To kick-off this theme off, LDN and NYC are collaborating and invite our members to join our two-part, first-ever global Mind Salon to share experiences and best practices across the pond, sharing ideas and experiences on how we can tackle challenging issues and recognise blindspots around ethical insight and its implementation.
Looking from a diverse perspective whether that’s agency or client side we are going to explore how we can be more ethical and inclusive through the collection and implementation of insight.
Our two intimate sessions will touch on two pertinent elements of great and ethical innovation: 1) recruitment of participants and research data capture and 2) the synthesis and implementation of insights.
We will explore:
Session 1: Recruitment and Research
How can we ensure we approach recruitment ethically - both in the process and in how we think about appropriate representation across participants?
How do we navigate issues of identity and the tension between our perceptions/research objectives vs how individuals choose to identify themselves?
How do we structure our discussion guides and questionnaires so we can ensure we are addressing sensitive issues in a thoughtful manner?
How do we account for our own blindspots in how we engage in and participate in the research process?
How do we capture insights while ethically designing for our own biases and/or pressure to remove or censor data we consider unfamiliar or uncomfortable?
How do we look to research as a tool for accountability within our organizations?
Session 2: Synthesise and Implementation of insights
What stories do we synthesize to tell or sell a concept?
How do we navigate decisions about what data we are not using and why?
How can we address our biases to ensure the stories we tell are as accurate and representative as possible?
How can we help ensure that our research stories are told by researchers who can thoughtfully represent the end consumer?
How do we hold our clients accountable for their own diversity efforts?
How do we hold our clients accountable to take the research forward in an ethical and thoughtful fashion?
