Programming Feature: Anti-Racism 101
Who: WIN x Fearless Futures
What: Anti-Racism 101
When: September 23, 2020
At the end of September 2020, Women in Innovation partnered with the amazing Fearless Futures organization to bring the community a virtual interactive workshop on the principles of anti-racism.
Over recent months, the pervasive and systematic inequalities in our society have been highlighted by the global Black Lives Matter protests and the disproportionate deaths of black people from COVID19. These systems are not just ‘out there’ globally but shape and inform our everyday interactions and relationships: from our home to the workplace.
Women in Innovation believe that as innovators, we have a significant opportunity and responsibility to design equal and anti-racist products, systems, and experiences. But there are no quick fixes to drive this change; gaining an understanding of interpersonal and systemic racism first is vital for progress to be authentic, nuanced, and long-lasting.
In the virtual workshop, we explored the different subtle ways that racism shows up in everyday interactions and examined various mechanisms and manifestations of racism. We also explored the role of privilege and intersectionality in various racist scenarios. At the end of the workshop, we had started crafting new ways of being and doing that directly disrupted anti-blackness in their everyday being and doing.
A big thank you to our fantastic partners Fearless Futures - and an extra shout-out to Sable - for hosting such an inspiring and thought-provoking event. Also, a big thank you to our community members for your attendance, openness, and honesty in talking about this topic and - We look for
